Vibrational ladder climbing with chirped pulses

Enhanced vibrational ladder climbing has been demonstrated in NO using picosecond, chirped, free-electron laser pulses. Three steps of the vibrational ladder are climbed within a single infrared laser pulse. Quantum interference in the total yield of rotational pathways is observed.
