When Anthony van Leeuwenhoek fi rst looked through his microscope, he could not have envisaged how his eye as detector would come to be replaced by fast, sensitive cameras and his illuminating candle by intense light sources and lasers. Now, microspectroscopic imaging tools are used to study the distribution and interactions of biomolecules within cells and tissue.
