The structure of a BaO overlayer on W single crystals and impregnated W cathodes forms a subject of considerable controversy. Medium-Energy Ion Scattering (MEIS) is a powerful technique for the determination of surface structures and adsorbate locations. We employ this technique to unravel the overlayer structures of Ba and BaO films on W(100), which serve as model systems for a real impregnated cathode. The experimental results are compared with the outcome of Monte Carlo simulations of the ion scattering experiments.
